Doctorate in Osteopathy

Deuschte School of Osteopathy (HPS)’s Professional Doctorate in Osteopathy programme is the first of its kind, setting a new level of osteopathic scholarship. The programme is most likely to appeal to one of three groups:

• Osteopaths working in osteopathic education where career enhancement may be a major motivation for pursuing  D.Prof. (Ost)
• Osteopaths who are interested in research and who wish to follow an academic career in osteopathy without necessarily wanting to teach.
• Individuals who want to take up the challenge of doctoral level study as part of their personal and professional development and for whom the process will be an end in itself

Key Features

• The programme lasts four or five years
• You will have the opportunity to spend a year abroad
• The programme is based on a mixture of taught modules and independent study/research
• You will have the opportunity to study subjects that are highly relevant but not usually associated with osteopathic practice
• You will be working at the cutting edge of osteopathy and have the chance to make an original contribution to osteopathic knowledge.

Entry requirements

You should hold:

• An Honours degree; plus
• A postgraduate qualification demonstrating advanced competence in research methods*; or
• A qualification recognised as equivalent to the above, including some Masters-level learning
• Applicants must have at least four years’ post-graduation experience in clinical and/or education practice and must continue in practice throughout the programme

* You may undertake a qualification in research methods whilst registered on the D.Prof. (Ost) but must complete this before the end of the second year of the programme. A Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methodology is offered by the HPS.

Key programme information

The programme is divided into two stages: the first stage, which covers the first two years, is taught in one, two or four-day blocks and will challenge you to think more deeply and reflectively about the nature of osteopathic practice, the challenges and ‘big questions’ facing osteopathy, the significance of evidence, experience and intuition, and the implications of the changing understanding of pain and disability. By the end of this stage, you will have clearly identified your research question, leading to Stage two where you gather data, analyse and evaluate them, and develop your thesis and generate a portfolio to disseminate it. The culmination is the presentation of your thesis in the viva when you have the opportunity to explain and defend your ideas in front of two external examiners.
